Mobile Device Manangement
and Security
Mobile devices are fast
becoming a key IT management
issue. Many organizations
struggle to identify and
adopt best practices for
effectively managing this
valuable corporate asset.
To gain a better understanding
of where enterprises stand
in their efforts to manage
and secure mobile devices,
TechRepublic recently surveyed
IT professionals to collect
data on the key issues surrounding
the management of mobile
devices. The results of
the survey, conducted on
behalf of XcelleNet, provide
data on the extent of mobile
device usage for business
purposes, identify the leading
hazards that affect mobile
devices, expose the vulnerability
of information stored on
the devices, and highlight
current device management
issues and practices. by

Managing
the Mobile Workforce: Are
You Ready to Meet the Challenge?
The mobile phenomenon: like
it or not, it’s here to
stay. According to GartnerGroup,
more than two out of every
three telephone numbers
issued worldwide are for
cellular phones; laptops
and personal digital assistant
(PDAs) now outnumber desktop
workstations; and four out
of every five new workstations
provisioned are laptops.
Nearly 10,000 high-speed
Internet connections are
added each day, and by year-end
2003, more than one billion
mobile phones will be in
use worldwide. Given these
facts, it’s not surprising
that such devices are becoming
important tools in today’s
work force. Mobile technologies
allow enterprises to locate
employees where the business
need is strongest and allow
employees to enjoy greater
flexibility and—therefore—job
satisfaction. Because of
this, Gartner estimates
that by 2004, 60% of office
productivity workers will
carry at least three mobile
devices, and 80% of corporate
and government IT departments
will be forced to support
three appliance OS platforms.
