| Printing
From Your Palm or Pocket PC |
| By
Eriq Cook
Most PDAs come with a wealth
of features and applications
for general use, but a flaw
that most PDAs have is the
inability to print files.
There are now several 3rd
party software applications
to solve this problem, allowing
users to print directly from
their PDAs to virtually any
printer, including printers
that don't have an infrared
port. There are also portable
printers that can attach directly
to your PDA providing greater
greater mobility.
In
the past, if users wanted
print documents from their
PDAs, they first had to connect
their PDA to a desktop PC,
transfer/convert the file,
open it with a compatible
application and then print.
If you own a Windows CE or
Palm OS based PDA and wanna
learn how to print from your
PDA, this article is for you.

Printing
From Your Pocket PC
|

PrintPocketCE
by Field Software is a software
application that allows printing
from a Windows CE based Pocket
PC. PrintPocketCE can print
to most printers with an infrared
port. If your printer does
not have an infrared port,
you can buy an inexpensive
infrared
printer adapter to allow
this. With PrintPocketCE,
you can print documents including
Pocket Word and Excel, e-mails,
notes and more. I use PrintPocketCE
on my Casio EM-500 often to
print notes and Word documents
when I need to, using the
HP Laserjet 2100 printer in
my office.
To
print a document, simply launch
PrintPocketCE and a window
will appear allowing you to
select the document or e-mail
you want to print. Simply
select the document and a
print dialog box will appear.
Last, just click on the "Start
Printing" button and
that's it!
PrintPocketCE
supports most printer with
infrared capability, including
the Hewlett Packard LaserJet
2100 and Deskjet 900 series
printers, Canon Bubble-Jet
printers such as the BJC-50
and 80 series, Citizen, Seiko
and more. For more information
on printer compatibility,
see the PrintPocketCE compatibility
list for more information.
If you don't see your printer
on the list, you can add an
infrared printer adapter
directly to your printers
parallel port.
Overall,
PrintPocketCE is a great Pocket
PC printing application and
easy to use. Version 2.3 adds
Bluetooth printing support
with the
Wireless
Solutions BlueCard,
serial COM port support, SiPix
A6 printer support and
more. for more information
on PrintPocketCE, visit the
PrintPocketCE Web site.

Printing
from your Palm is easy with
Bachmann Software's
PrintBoy. PrintBoy prints
your Appointments, Addresses,
To Dos, Memos, and E-mail right
from your Palm to any printer.
Now offering full graphical
support for all Hewlett-Packard
LaserJet, DeskJet and compatible
printers, as well as new drivers
for Epson and Ricoh printers,
PrintBoy currently is the only
product on the market to offer
graphical output for the HP
DeskJet 350 moble printer.

InfraReady Adaptor
If
your printer does not have
a built-in infrared port,
a separate
InfraReady infrared adaptor
can be purchased directly
from the Bachman Software
Web site for $59.99. The InfraReady
adaptor connects to your printers
parallel port, and doesn't
require any special configuration
besides adding a battery.
No software is required, assuming
that PrintBoy is already installed
on your Palm. Bachman also
offers a special $15 discount
if you purchase PrintBoy and
the Infraready adapter together.
The
Infraready adaptor is a great
tool for business professionals
who often travel and need
to print documents for client
presentations and/or more.
For more information, visit
the
PrintBoy Web site.
Stay tuned for part two, as
I'll be covering printers
that attach directly to PDAs.
