Connecting to the Internet Wirelessly (Using the Cassiopeia/StarTAC Modem Cable)
by Eriq Cook

You can access the Internet wirelessly from your Cassiopeia Pocket PC using a Motorola StarTAC phone and the Cassiopeia/StarTAC modem cable (CELL300).
To do this, you will need the following:

  1. A Cassiopeia E-1xx, EG-800, EM-500 or BE series Pocket PC
  2. Motorola StarTAC/Talkabout/Timeport/V series cell phone that is micro-browser compatible (most new StarTACs have this feature).
  3. Internet/BrowseNow service activated on your StarTAC. This is an extra feature provided by your cellular provider. It is usually $4.95 - $14.95/mo. depending on your provider.
  4. Cassiopeia/StarTac Modem Cable, available directly from Casio.
  5. Internet Service Provider and dial-up account/e-mail account info
  6. 5-10 minutes.

Before you begin, make sure that you have your ISP's dial-up account info on hand, including your username, password and dial-up access phone number. You may also need to know your TCP/IP configuration settings, but most ISP's provide this automatically when you connect).

The first step is to setup an Internet connection on your Cassiopeia. To do this:

  1. Starting from the Today screen, tap Start / Settings, then tap on the Connections tab and finally the Modem icon.

A "Modem Connections" window will appear.

  1. Tap on New Connection...
  2. Type in a name for this connection, such as "StarTAC"
  3. Select Hayes Compatible on COM1 under "Select a modem" if it's not already selected.
  4. Select 19200 under "Baud Rate" if it's not already selected.

(If you need to configure your TCP/IP settings manually, tap on the Advanced button, then tap on the TCP/IP tab)

  1. Tap Next
  2. Enter your ISP's area code and phone number, then tap Next
  3. On the last window, de-select Wait for dial tone before dialing by tapping on the checkbox besides it. It should not be checked.
  4. Tap Finish

Now you should see your new connection appear in the Modem Connections window. Do not tap ok. You will need to double-check your dialing settings before exiting.

  1. Click on the Dialing tab
  2. Make sure that the area code is correct, and if you're required to dial the area code when dialing phone numbers, you also need to configure this by tapping on the Dialing Patterns... button.

  1. Now tap ok

The last thing you need to do is configure Pocket Internet Explorer and the Inbox e-mail tool to use your new connection. The following steps will show you how to set this up in Pocket IE only, but just repeat this procedure to configure your Inbox settings. You will also need to know the names of the POP and SMTP mail servers (or IP addresses) when setting up the Inbox to send/receive e-mail.

To use your new connection:

  1. Launch Pocket Internet Explorer
  2. Tap on the Tools menu (bottom of page), then tap Options...
  3. Next, tap on the Connections tab
  4. Tap on the button besides Type and select the modem connection you just created. It should be called "StarTAC or whatever else you named the connection).
  5. If Access remote content automatically button is not checked, check it.

That's it. Just connect your Cassiopeia to your StarTAC using the cable and you'll be ready to surf the Internet wirelessly. To connect to the Internet, just enter a Web address and tap on the Go button. A window will pop-up asking for your username and password. Type this in and then tap Connect. Your StarTAC will begin dialing your ISP automatically. You can also establish an Internet connection manually by tapping Tools / Connect (in Pocket IE), or by tapping Services / Connect from the Inbox.

If you have problems connecting to the Internet, remember to make sure that your StarTAC is Internet capable and that you have Internet service activated on your StarTAC.
